Paris, 28 February (HS): The Laureus World Sports Academy on Thursday announced that it is withdrawing the nomination of Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner for the 2025 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. The decision comes after a three-month suspension imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The academy clarified in an email sent to the nomination panel that Sinner is no longer eligible for the award due to the suspension.
WADA revealed earlier this month that Sinner’s dope test came back positive for clostebol in March 2024. Following this, he entered into a case resolution agreement and accepted a three-month ban. However, he also clarified that he did not intentionally consume the banned substance and it did not improve his performance. Despite this, athletes are responsible for the actions of their support personnel.
The full list of nominees for the Laureus World Sports Awards 2025 will be announced on March 3.
