Government’s Firm Stand Against Drug Trafficking

New Delhi, March 2 (HS): Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has said that the Modi government is leaving no stone unturned to punish drug smugglers who push our youth into the dark pit of drugs for the greed of money.

In his post on social media platform X, Amit Shah said,

The Modi govt is unsparing in punishing drug traffickers who drag our youth into the dark abyss of addiction for the greed of money.

As a result of a foolproof investigation with a bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom strategy, 29 drug traffickers have been convicted by the court in 12 different cases across India.

We pledge to continue combating the drug menace with ruthless and meticulous investigations to build a drug-free Bharat.

Their details are as follows:

Ahmedabad Zone

In 2019, NCB Ahmedabad Zonal Unit arrested Mohammad Rizwan and Mohammad Jishan in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, for smuggling 23.859 kg of hashish. Sahidul Rehman was also arrested. All three were sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and Rs 01 lakh fine.

Bhopal Zone (Mandsaur)

In July 2022, NCB Mandsaur stopped a Harrier and Verna in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, seized 123.080 kg of ganja. Four accused were convicted and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and Rs 2 lakh fine.

Chandigarh Zone

NCB Chandigarh officers intercepted a parcel containing opium and a parcel containing 390 grams of Charas. Naseeb Singh and Gobind Singh were sentenced to 3 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000. Bhim Lama was convicted under Section 20 of the NDPS Act, 1985, and sentenced to 6 months of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000.

Kochi Zone

NCB Kochi arrested Zimbabwean Sharon Chigwaza at Kochi International Airport, resulting in the seizure of 2.910 kg of heroin. She was sentenced to 11 years in prison and a Rs 3,00,000 fine.

Dehradun Zone

In 2018, NCB Dehradun seized 450 grams of Charas, leading to Naman Bansal’s arrest and co-accusation. Bansal was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 20,000 fine.

Delhi Zone

NCB Delhi Zonal Unit arrested Sahi Ram and Satyawan alias Pandit for smuggling 1.950 kg of Charas. After investigation, they were convicted and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and Rs 01 lakh fine.

Hyderabad Zone

Eight accused individuals, Suresh Shyamrao Pawar, Vishal Ramesh Pawar, Balaji Ramdas Ware, Manoj Vilas Dhotre, Dhyaneshwar Lalasaheb Deshmukh, Ramraje Chaturbhuj Gunjale, Akshay Anant Gandhi, and Sachin Dagdu Sanap, were arrested for drug trafficking in Ranga Reddy District, and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh fine to each.

Indore Zone

In September 2021, NCB Indore intercepted a truck in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh, seized 152.665 kg of ganja, arresting Mahendra Singh Yadav, Sohail Daud Khan Pathan, Suresh Gupta, co-receiver Ram Babu Yadav, and sentenced them to 15 years imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh fine.

Kolkata Zone

NCB Kolkata Zone officers seized 1301 kg of Ganja from a Tata 709 LGV in July 2020, arresting two accused for drug trafficking. Shahjan Tarafdar was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a Rs 1 lakh fine.

Lucknow ZoneIn February 2022, 3.1 kg of Charas/Hashish was recovered from Dashrath’s possession in Chiripur, Uttar Pradesh. He was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment with Rs 1.5 lakh fine. In January 2024, 08. kg of Opium was recovered from Dheeraj Kumar’s possession in Chatra, Jharkhand. Kumar was sentenced to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment with Rs. 1 lakh fine.
