Ottawa, March 10 (H.S.): Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney fiercely criticized U.S. President Donald Trump during his victory speech, accusing him of using unfair tariffs to undermine Canada’s economy.
Carney expressed confidence that Canada would prevail in this trade conflict, likening it to their success in hockey. He rebuffed Trump’s suggestion of making Canada the 51st state, stating unequivocally, America is not Canada, and Canada will never be a part of America.
Carney highlighted the negative impact of Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian construction and trade, asserting, We will not let this succeed, and we will respond fully. In retaliation, Canada has enacted a matching 25% tariff on $30 billion worth of U.S. products.
Carney emphasized that Canada’s tariffs will remain until the U.S. ensures fair trade practices. He noted the cultural differences, declaring, America is a melting pot, while Canada is a beautiful mosaic, and underscored the importance of preserving Canadian identity. He called for unity among Canadians in confronting this crisis, urging extraordinary measures to advance the economy for the benefit of all citizens. This tension follows Trump’s recent tariff imposition, leading to a swift response from the Trudeau government.
