
New Delhi, March 11 (H.S.): The Khadi and Village Industries Commission has given a gift of wage increase to millions of artisans on the occasion of the Holi festival. Their remuneration will be increased by 20 percent starting from April 1, 2025.
Manoj Kumar, Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), stated at a press conference held at the office located at Raj Ghat in Delhi on Tuesday that currently, spinners receive ₹12.50 for each ‘lachha’ spun on the charkha, which will see an increase of ₹2.50 from April 1. According to the new rate, they will now receive ₹15 for each ‘lachha’ spun. The government has made a historic increase in the income of spinners and weavers. In the past 11 years, the Modi government has increased the remuneration of khadi artisans by 275 percent.
During the India Textile-2025 event at Bharat Mandapam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the ‘Khadi for Fashion’ mantra for the ‘Khadi Renaissance.’ To popularize khadi as modern attire, KVIC held grand fashion shows in cities like Nagpur, Pune, Chennai, and Jaipur, aiming to connect with the younger generation.
This initiative has successfully repositioned khadi as trendy apparel. KVIC Chairman highlighted a remarkable surge in khadi sales over the past decade, with figures rising from ₹31,000 crores to ₹1,55,000 crores in 2023-24. Sales of khadi clothing increased from ₹1,081 crores to ₹6,496 crores, contributing to the creation of 10.17 lakh new jobs. A record in production and sales is anticipated for 2024-25.
