
Guwahati, 02 April (HS): Finally, after all the speculations and discussions, the Assam State Election Commission has announced the dates for the Panchayat elections on Wednesday. This time the elections will be held in two phases. The first phase of voting will be held on May 2 and the second phase on May 7. The State Election Commission has taken several important steps to make the electoral process fair and peaceful.
The model code of conduct has come into force across the state as soon as the election date was announced. Under this, there will be a ban on the announcements of government schemes, monitoring of misuse of government resources and strict monitoring of propaganda by political parties.
The counting of votes will take place on May 11 and the election results will be declared on the same day. The State Election Commission made this announcement in a press conference held at the conference hall of the Assam State Election Commission located at Panjabari in Guwahati today.
Candidates will be able to file their nomination papers between April 3 and April 11. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on April 12 and names can be withdrawn till April 14.
A total of 25,007 polling stations have been set up for the Panchayat elections, where voting will take place from 7 am to 5 pm.
In the first phase, elections will be held in the districts of Upper Assam, while in the second phase, voting will take place in the districts of Central and Lower Assam. Deployment of security forces will be increased to ensure fair and peaceful voting. Sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling stations will be identified and additional security forces will be deployed there.
A total of 1 crore 80 lakh 36 thousand 682 voters will exercise their franchise in the Panchayat elections this time in Assam. The Election Commission has updated the voter list, so that the name of any eligible voter is not left out from the list.
This time the Panchayat elections will be held without any symbol, so that transparency is maintained in the electoral process and fairness can be ensured. The Commission has appealed to all political parties and candidates to follow the code of conduct.
