New Delhi, September 6 (HS): Adani Power, a flagship company of the Adani Group, has inked a landmark deal with Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop a 570 MW Wangchhu hydropower project, with an investment of approximately Rs 6,000 crore. The power purchase and concession agreements were signed in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
The project will be executed under a Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) model, aiming to meet Bhutan’s peak winter electricity demand while exporting surplus power to India during summer months. Detailed project reports are already complete, with construction expected to begin in the first half of 2026 and targeted for completion within five years.
This initiative forms a crucial part of Bhutan’s ambitious clean energy goals and reflects a deepening of Bhutan-India energy cooperation. It is also the first major hydropower project under the MoU signed in May 2025 between Adani Group and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.
The investment promises to boost local infrastructure and job creation, while reinforcing Bhutan’s leadership in sustainable renewable energy development. The signing ceremony marks a significant milestone in the evolving partnership between the two nations in the renewable energy sector.
