NEW DELHI, 8 March (H.S.): Delhi’s air quality has once again deteriorated to a poor
level, prompting the implementation of GRAP-1 restrictions in the National
Capital Region. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has mandated
the immediate implementation of Stage-1 of the Graded Response Action Plan
(GRAP) due to the decline in air quality within the National Capital Region
(NCR). This decision has been made in accordance with the directives of the
Supreme Court.
The sub-committee of the Commission for Air Quality
Management (CAQM) assessed the air quality situation in Delhi-NCR during its
latest meeting. This decision was made in light of the forecasts provided by
the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical
Meteorology (IITM), as well as the increasing levels of the Air Quality Index
(AQI) in Delhi.
On March 7, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was
measured at 202, categorizing it as ‘poor.’ The meteorological department has
indicated that air quality is likely to persist in the ‘poor’ category in the
upcoming days, attributed to a low ventilation coefficient, reduced wind speed,
and adverse weather conditions.
In Stage-1 of the GRAP, actions will be implemented to
manage construction activities and mitigate dust pollution, aiming to lower
dust concentrations in public areas and roadways. All relevant agencies have
been directed to adhere rigorously to these regulations to prevent any further
deterioration of the Air Quality Index (AQI). Dust control measures will be
prioritized, particularly in relation to construction and demolition
activities, as well as in the management of roads and open spaces. The CAQM has
directed all relevant agencies to execute the tasks outlined in the GRAP within
a specified timeframe. It is essential to take necessary measures for the
control of air pollution. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to adhere to
the Citizen Charter of GRAP.
