India’s Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa

St. Louis (USA), Aug 23 (HS): Round five of the Sinquefield Cup saw all five encounters end in draws, keeping the tournament wide open at the halfway stage. India’s Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa held France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave to a comfortable draw with the black pieces, while reigning World Champion D. Gukesh split points after a dramatic, topsy-turvy battle against Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

Top seed Fabiano Caruana maintained his lead by drawing against compatriot Wesley So, taking his tally to 3.5 points. Levon Aronian shared the spoils with France’s Alireza Firouzja, while American GM Samuel Sevian drew with Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

Vachier-Lagrave opted for safety against Praggnanandhaa, forcing a repetition in just 26 moves. Gukesh, meanwhile, steered the game into complications with a queen-pawn opening. Duda seized the initiative with precise play, but a critical error in the middlegame allowed Gukesh to claw back, as the clash stretched to 45 moves before ending in parity.
