Guwahati, 16 March (HS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah, currently on a three-day visit to Assam, is set to preside over a crucial meeting with the chief ministers of Northeastern states today.
The agenda of the meeting focuses on assessing the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the legal framework that has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Officials confirmed that discussions will revolve around the progress made in enforcing the new law across the region.
Shah’s itinerary includes a morning visit to Kokrajhar, where he will address the 57th annual conference of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU). This organization played a significant role in the signing of the historic Bodo Peace Accord five years ago.
In the afternoon, Shah will land in Guwahati for the meeting with chief ministers of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, and Sikkim. With Manipur under President’s rule following CM N Biren Singh’s resignation, the state’s representation in the meeting remains uncertain.
Each state will present a report on its implementation of BNS during the session, officials said.
Later at night, Shah is scheduled to return to New Delhi, wrapping up his tour. His visit began on Friday night in Assam, where he inaugurated the upgraded Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Golaghat before heading to Mizoram. On March 15, he attended an Assam Rifles programme during the day.————–
