New Delhi, April 24 (HS): Following the attack in Pahalgam, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is scheduled to visit Srinagar on Friday to assess the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. This comes after a soldier made the ultimate sacrifice during an encounter with terrorists in Basantgarh, Udhampur, just a day after the Pahalgam incident. General Dwivedi will receive updates on military anti-terrorism operations in the Valley and along the Line of Control, alongside the 15 Corps Commander and other National Rifles commanders.
In response to the attack on tourists, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a security meeting on Wednesday, where General Dwivedi outlined the current security measures in Pahalgam and wider Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have been placed on high alert, and ongoing search operations aim to apprehend the attackers. Following this, a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting was held, wherein Singh briefed Prime Minister Modi about the situation.
In another encounter sparked by specific intelligence regarding terrorists’ presence, security forces engaged in firefights in the Tangmarg area of Kulgam. Havildar Jhantu Ali Sheikh was severely injured during a joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir Police in Basantgarh and later succumbed to his injuries. The Indian Army honored his bravery, pledging support to his family in their mourning.
