Arrest of Minister Vijay Shah Stayed in Controversial Comment Case Against Colonel Sofia Quraishi

New Delhi, May 19 (HS): The Supreme Court has granted interim relief to Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah in the case of his controversial comments about Colonel Sofia Quraishi. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant has stayed his arrest on the condition that Vijay Shah participates in the investigation. The court has ordered the formation of a three-member SIT to investigate the matter.

The court directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Madhya Pradesh to form the SIT by 10 AM tomorrow. The court stated that the SIT would consist of IPS officers, and no official from Madhya Pradesh will be included. A female officer will also be part of this SIT. An officer of IG rank in the IPS will head the SIT, and two officers of SP rank will be its members. The court mentioned that it does not wish to monitor this case but has ordered the SIT to submit an investigation report. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 28.

During the hearing, the court reprimanded Vijay Shah for his statement, saying that the entire country is embarrassed by it. Earlier, on May 15, the Supreme Court admonished Vijay Shah, stating, How can you make such a statement? Do you know who you are? You are a minister in the government. Every word carries importance when the country is facing a crisis; you should understand your responsibility.

In fact, Vijay Shah has challenged the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s order to register an FIR. On May 15, lawyer Vibha Makheja mentioned before the bench headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai that the High Court did not hear Vijay Shah’s side before ordering the FIR. The meaning of his statement was misinterpreted. Vijay Shah has also apologized. The Chief Justice had remarked that the statement made by the client was of a person holding a constitutional position, and he should have realized the responsibility.

In fact, Minister Vijay Shah made the controversial statement without naming Colonel Sofia Quraishi at a public event in Indore. This statement caused a significant uproar. The Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and ordered the registration of an FIR against Vijay Shah. An FIR was registered against Vijay Shah following the High Court’s order.
