Chandigarh, May 18 (HS): Ali Khan Mahmudabad, an associate professor at Ashoka University, has been arrested in Delhi due to a social media post concerning Operation Sindoor, following a complaint from a BJP Yuva Morcha leader. The police confirmed his arrest and are investigating his comments related to the military operation, which targets terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Ashoka University acknowledged the arrest, stating, We are in the process of ascertaining details of the case, and promised to cooperate with authorities during the investigation. This incident comes after the Haryana State Commission for Women issued a notice concerning Mahmudabad’s remarks on May 7, which allegedly disparaged women in the armed forces, specifically Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh. The Commission chairperson, Renu Bhatia, criticized his language and expressed disappointment that Mahmudabad did not present himself to apologize.
Mahmudabad defended his comments, claiming that the Commission misinterpreted his statements and stressed his right to free speech, emphasizing his support for the military while denouncing those who promote hatred. His statements would undergo further scrutiny due to concerns about potentially undermining the role of women officers in the Indian Armed Forces.
