Dubai, September 17 (HS): On the eve of their crucial Asia Cup 2025 encounter against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Pakistan abruptly cancelled its pre-match press conference, heightening tension around the tournament. The team, however, went ahead with its training session at the ICC Academy, where the Indian squad was also practicing, adding to the charged atmosphere following the recent handshake controversy.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to replace match referee Andy Pycroft, but the appeal was rejected. Pycroft had informed Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha ahead of the India-Pakistan clash that there would be no pre-toss handshake with his Indian counterpart Suryakumar Yadav. The episode sparked speculation that Pakistan might even pull out of their fixture against the UAE, though Pycroft remains confirmed as referee for this game.
The upcoming contest is a do-or-die battle for both Pakistan and the UAE, with the winner set to secure a berth in the Super Four stage. India has already qualified after registering two consecutive victories.
The Indian team endured three hours of training under intense heat on Tuesday evening from 6 pm, while Pakistan opted for a light warm-up football session starting at 8 pm, lasting around 20 minutes.
From India’s camp, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, and Hardik Pandya were first to hit the nets, followed by Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav. Young batter Harshit Rana entertained with some powerful strokes, including a six that sailed toward Pakistan’s training area.
Indian bowlers engaged in relatively light drills, given their extended spells in the last two matches. Considering the humid conditions, speedster Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be rested for the upcoming clash against Oman on Friday.
