
Washington, March 17 (H.S.): A storm has wreaked havoc in Central and Eastern America, with at least 39 reported dead so far. Hail fell amid tornadoes, and heavy rainfall caused significant destruction in many areas.
According to a report from CNN, 5.12 inches of rain fell in Tupelo on Saturday, breaking the daily rainfall record. The previous record was 2.82 inches recorded on March 15, 1973. Bowling Green also saw a daily record broken on Saturday with 3.3 inches of rain, surpassing the previous 2.25 inches measured on March 15, 1922. Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, and Kentucky, as well as Indiana, South Carolina, and Paulding County in Georgia, have been severely affected by tornadoes. In several areas, wind speeds reached up to 89 miles per hour.
