DEIR AL-BALAH (Gaza Strip), 28 June (H.S.): Israeli strikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 62 people, according to health workers, as the region grapples with a deepening humanitarian crisis and potential ceasefire discussions. These strikes commenced late Friday and persisted into Saturday, with multiple casualties including 12 individuals near the Palestine Stadium, which housed displaced persons, and eight residents in nearby apartments. Victims were transported to Shifa Hospital, while over 20 bodies were sent to Nasser Hospital. A midday strike on Saturday saw 11 fatalities on a street in eastern Gaza City, with remains taken to Al-Ahli Hospital.
U.S. President Donald Trump indicated the possibility of a ceasefire agreement within the week, stating efforts were underway to address the situation in Gaza. An Israeli official noted that Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer would visit Washington for discussions on the ceasefire, Iran, and related topics. Ongoing negotiations have been inconsistent since Israel resumed military operations following the collapse of a previous ceasefire in March, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Over 50 hostages are currently held in Gaza, with fewer than half believed to be alive. These hostages were among the 250 taken during Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to a war that has claimed over 56,000 Palestinian lives, predominantly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is bolstered by public support for military actions in Iran, potentially giving him leeway to pursue a ceasefire in Gaza, despite dissent from his far-right coalition partners.
Palestinians are enduring extreme food shortages amidst blockade conditions, with stolen supplies and violent encounters reported at aid distribution sites. Israeli military forces are investigating instances of harm to civilians approaching these locations.
