Dhaka, March 03 (HS): Dr. Mohammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the Interim Advisor of Bangladesh, has stressed the need for comprehensive documentation of human rights violations during the tenure of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party.
Yunus’s remarks came on Sunday during a discussion with UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis and Huma Khan, Senior Human Rights Adviser of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office. The meeting took place at the State Guest House Jamuna.
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, he specifically discussed incidents such as violent action against protesters in Shapla Chattar, police brutality after the verdict against Delwar Hossain Sayeedi and extrajudicial killings over the years. Yunus said that there is a need for proper documentation of all kinds of atrocities committed against the people of the country. Until this document is ready, it is difficult to ensure justice.
Lewis assured him that the United Nations is ready to provide technical assistance to help Bangladesh build its capacity to document these violations. Yunus also expressed his gratitude to the United Nations for this. He said that it is a matter of happiness that the United Nations has published the report.
Lewis told the Chief Adviser that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk will brief member countries on the findings of the report during the 55th session of the Human Rights Council on March 5.
He hoped that the visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Bangladesh from March 13 to 16 will draw renewed global attention to the Rohingya crisis. Lewis said that $15 million per month would be required to maintain food supplies and other basic needs for Rohingya refugees.
