BJP and TMC delegations approach EC over fake voters issue

BJP leader Amit Malviya speaking to the media.

New Delhi, March 11 (HS): The controversy surrounding fake voters in West Bengal is intensifying, with both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing each other of manipulating the voter list. On Tuesday, both parties submitted complaints to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The BJP delegation, led by state president Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, highlighted alarming figures, claiming there are 1,303,065 fake voters, many having the same names and ages, and approximately 8,415 with identical EPIC numbers. Amit Malviya alleged that over 14 years, Mamata Banerjee’s government has allowed illegal immigrants to infiltrate the voter list. He urged the ECI to take action to preserve the integrity of the democratic process.

Concurrently, a TMC delegation also raised concerns about duplicate EPICs, with MP Sagarika Ghosh emphasizing the gravity of the issue. She demanded transparency from the ECI on how many duplicate EPICs exist and urged for a clear protocol on changes to the voter list. Both parties are calling for a rigorous investigation into Aadhaar card cloning and its potential impact on the electoral process, stressing that a trustworthy voter list is critical for ensuring fair elections in the state.
