Berlin, Aug 27 (HS): Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a permanent deal, the club announced on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old, who impressed during a six-month loan spell with Dortmund last season, has now committed his future to the German side with a contract running until June 2030. According to reports, the deal is worth around €25 million ($27 million), notably lower than the purchase option initially set when he joined on loan last winter.
Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl hailed Chukwuemeka as “an exceptional talent” who showcased his potential in the second half of last season. “Carney can make the difference in tight situations, adds creativity in midfield, and brings a new dimension to our game,” Kehl remarked.
During the 2024/25 campaign, Chukwuemeka featured in 17 matches across all competitions for Dortmund, including four appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup. He scored once in the Bundesliga – in a convincing 4-1 victory over Freiburg.
Although minor injuries limited his role mostly to substitute appearances, the coaching staff rated his long-term potential highly. Head coach Niko Kovač is expected to integrate him more regularly into the squad this season.
Chukwuemeka himself expressed delight at making the move permanent. “It feels amazing to become a full-time part of Borussia Dortmund. Over the past months, I’ve built a strong bond with the coach, my teammates, and especially the fans. BVB now feels like home, and I’m ready to give everything to help the team achieve its goals,” he said.
