Chillai-Kalan enters peak phase as intense cold wave set to grip J&K; Dry spell to persist,water levels likely to fall





Srinagar, Jan 07 (KINS):The harshest phase of Chillai-Kalan is set to begin in Jammu and Kashmir from tomorrow, with cold-wave conditions expected to intensify and prevail over the next four days, Kashmir weather, in its latest update said.
Minimum temperatures across the Kashmir plains are likely to plunge sharply, ranging between –4°C and –9°C, while higher reaches may witness even more severe cold, with temperatures generally hovering between –6°C and –13°C. In the Jammu plains, night temperatures are forecast to range between 0°C and 6°C.
Kashmir weather said that largely dry conditions will dominate the region over the next 10 days, as no major Western Disturbance is expected to impact Jammu and Kashmir till January 17. However, the possibility of isolated light rain or snowfall over higher elevations around January 12–13 cannot be completely ruled out.
Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day peak winter period in Kashmir, is traditionally marked by intense cold, frozen water bodies, and heavy snowfall.(KINS)
