Kolkata, 12 May (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid a heartfelt tribute on the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu, the renowned linguist and inventor of the Ol Chiki script. She described his contribution to the Santali community as a matter of pride for Bengal and highlighted that her government was the first to declare his birth anniversary a public holiday in the state.
In a message posted on social media, the Chief Minister said,
On the birth anniversary of the eminent linguist and inventor of the Ol Chiki script, Pandit Raghunath Murmu, I pay my heartfelt tribute. It is our pride that our government was the first to declare a public holiday on his birth anniversary, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to our Santali brothers and sisters. This pioneering initiative is now being followed elsewhere too. We have also established a college in his name. I once again offer him my respectful homage.
Legacy of Pandit Raghunath Murmu
Pandit Raghunath Murmu (1905–1982) was a revered figure in the world of Santali literature and linguistics. He created the Ol Chiki script, giving the Santali language a unique written identity. His innovation not only preserved the language but also empowered the Santali community with cultural pride and recognition.
Murmu authored several literary works, including plays and books such as Dharam Paha and Singar Begun. His efforts in developing Santali literature have left an indelible mark on the cultural history of eastern India.
The West Bengal government has organized various programmes across the state in his honor, and the establishment of a college bearing his name reflects the administration’s commitment to keeping his legacy alive.
