Vatican City, May 6 (H.S.): The selection process for Pope Francis’s successor is set to commence tomorrow, with 170 cardinals, including 132 electors, arriving for the conclave. This historic election is particularly significant for its geographical diversity, representing 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.

The conclave will officially begin on Wednesday, although cardinals are not required to vote along national lines. Insights into the geographical perspectives of the cardinals indicate varied priorities. Currently, there are 135 cardinals under 80, hailing from 71 countries, though two will not participate due to health reasons.

A two-thirds majority, or 89 votes, is necessary for a successful election. Italy leads with 17 cardinals, followed by the USA (10), Brazil (7), and other nations with varying representations. In total, there are 53 cardinals from Europe, though only 52 will vote due to illness. Representation extends to Asia (23), Africa (17), South America (17), North America (16), Central America (4), and Oceania (4).

The voting will be confidential, with support staff for the cardinals having taken an oath of confidentiality. Breaching this oath could result in immediate expulsion from the Church. The conclave will begin with an oath in the Sistine Chapel, following the conclusion of the 11th General Assembly, which focused on crucial discussions among the cardinals.
