
New Delhi, March 11 (H.S.): The Commonwealth Games Federation (CWGF) announced on Monday that it has changed its name to ‘Commonwealth Sport.’ This change is considered an important step towards transforming the organization from a sports federation to a sports movement.
This announcement was made on Commonwealth Day (March 10). In the press release issued by the federation, it was stated, From Commonwealth Day 2025, the Commonwealth Games Federation will be known as ‘Commonwealth Sport.’ This new name reflects the organization’s journey from being a sports federation to becoming a sports movement.
Katie Sadleir, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Commonwealth Sport, said, The name ‘Commonwealth Sport’ presents our mission in a stronger and more unified manner, which will make our identity more impactful and broad. However, legally, the name of the organization will remain ‘Commonwealth Games Federation.’
King Charles Inaugurates the Kings Baton Relay
Meanwhile, the patron of Commonwealth Sport, King Charles, officially launched the ‘Commonwealth Sport Kings Baton Relay’ for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at Buckingham Palace on Monday.
He placed his message for the Commonwealth in the first baton and handed it over to the first runner, Sir Chris Hoy, thereby starting this historic relay. This event was held 500 days before the opening ceremony of Glasgow 2026.
This year’s baton relay will be the longest one yet, allowing the sports federations of 74 Commonwealth nations and territories six days to organize their activities.
