Srinagar- Cyber fraud cases amounting to Rs 184.91 crore were reported in Jammu and Kashmir, with authorities managing to recover Rs 32.64 crore due to prompt reporting by victims, Senior Superintendent of Police at the Cyber Investigation Centre for Excellence, Ramesh Gupta, said on Thursday.
Gupta stressed that public awareness and timely action remain the most effective tools in preventing and mitigating cybercrime. Speaking on cyber safety, Gupta said the “golden hour” immediately after a cyber fraud is crucial for tracing transactions and recovering defrauded money.
He said that across the country, more than 18,000 cyber fraud complaints were received during 2025, including a significant number from Jammu and Kashmir. In the Union Territory alone, frauds worth Rs 184.91 crore were reported, out of which Rs 32.64 crore was successfully recovered.
“Shortly after a cyber fraud occurs, people should immediately register a complaint. Any delay often makes recovery difficult,” Gupta said, urging victims to report incidents without hesitation.
The SSP appealed to the public to dial the national cybercrime helpline number 1930 or lodge complaints online as soon as they suspect fraud. He cautioned citizens against downloading applications, opening links, or responding to calls and messages from unknown or suspicious sources, noting that such actions often lead to financial loss and data theft.
Gupta also advised people to safeguard their personal documents and credentials to prevent misuse and the creation of mule accounts, which are increasingly being used in cybercrime networks.
Reiterating the commitment of the cyber police, he said authorities remain available to assist victims and urged people not to feel embarrassed or hesitant about reporting cyber fraud cases.
“Increased awareness, vigilance and timely reporting can significantly reduce cybercrime and help protect people from financial and personal loss,” he added.
