New Delhi, March 23 (HS): On the occasion of Martyrs’ Day on Sunday, Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveiled the statue of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park in Malviya Nagar. Present at the event were MP Bansuri Swaraj, MLA Satish Upadhyay, along with other attendees.
The Chief Minister highlighted the uproar from the opposition regarding the picture of Bhagat Singh when the BJP government assumed office, noting accusations that her office had removed it. She criticized the opposition for not addressing the destroyed statue of Bhagat Singh, questioning their patriotism.
On Martyrs’ Day, she expressed pride in unveiling a new statue, asserting their deep sense of patriotism without needing reminders. She emphasized the importance of maintaining statues and the national flag, implying that neglecting them undermines their significance. Furthermore, she mentioned the necessity for herself and Bansuri Swaraj to continue the developmental legacy of former Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj.
BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay reflected on March 23 as a day filled with sorrow, pride, and anger, marking the execution of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, who were young martyrs that sacrificed for the country. He noted their significant impact during the freedom movement and the anger stemming from British injustices, stating that the British, fearful of the youths’ influence, executed them a day early on March 23.
