New Delhi, March 04 (HS): Delhi High Court has stayed the suspension of students protesting in Jamia University till further orders. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma’s bench said that peaceful protests are a part of training to develop the basic principles and norms of civil society. The next hearing of the case will be on April 2.
The court said that the way Jamia University has handled the students’ protest is a matter of concern. The court told the Jamia University administration to handle the students carefully. The court said that it is not looking at what was the reason for the protest, but the facts show that this protest was peaceful. While hearing the petition of the suspended students, the High Court ordered the formation of a peace committee. The peace committee will include university officials and the Vice Chancellor of the University will supervise that committee. This committee will work to control the situation and establish peace in the university. In this process, the peace committee will also include student representatives. The court directed to file a status report on this matter within a week.
Seven students of Jamia University have said in the petition that their side was not even heard before they were suspended. One student said that his suspension by the university has affected his studies and career. One student said that he was not even a part of the protest and he went to the spot as a spectator and returned to his class.
On February 10, students protested in Jamia University to protest the alleged attack by Delhi Police on December 15, 2019 by entering the campus. After the protest, many students were detained by the police and released after about 12 hours.
