Delhi, 13 October (H.S.): India is poised for a series-clinching victory in the second Test against the West Indies, requiring just 58 more runs on the final day with nine wickets in hand. At the close of play on day four at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, India had reached 63 for the loss of one wicket in their second innings, with Sai Sudharsan (30*) and KL Rahul (25*) at the crease.
Set a modest target of 121 to win, India’s chase began with the early loss of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for 8. However, Sudharsan and Rahul calmly navigated the remaining overs to place the hosts firmly in command. The target was established after the West Indies, who were forced to follow on, were bowled out for 390 in their second innings, managing a slender lead of 120 runs.
Resilient West Indies Post 390Resuming their second innings on the fourth morning at 173 for two, the West Indies displayed significant fightback, led by opener John Campbell who registered his maiden Test century. Campbell’s resilient knock of 115, compiled from 199 balls with 12 fours and three sixes, ended when he was trapped leg-before-wicket by Ravindra Jadeja.
Shai Hope continued the resistance, also compiling a century (103 off 214 balls) before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj.
Following Hope’s departure with the score at 293, Kuldeep Yadav triggered a middle-order collapse. He first removed Tevin Imlach (12) and then struck twice in quick succession to dismiss captain Roston Chase (40) and Khary Pierre for a duck, leaving the visitors reeling. A late-order partnership of over 50 runs for the final wicket between an unbeaten Justin Greaves (50*) and Jayden Seales (32) frustrated the Indian bowlers before Jasprit Bumrah finally wrapped up the innings.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah were the chief destroyers, claiming three wickets each, while Mohammed Siraj picked up two. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar chipped in with one wicket apiece.
