Deshmukh and Humpy draw in intense Women's Chess World Cup final.

Delhi, 27 July (H.S.): The first game of the Women’s Chess World Cup final between Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy ended in a draw after a 41-move struggle in Batumi, Georgia. 19-year-old International Master Deshmukh displayed ambition, surprising with a d4 opening she hadn’t previously used in the tournament, indicating thorough preparation.

Veteran Humpy, India’s top female player, matched her opponent’s moves, showcasing her experience and composure throughout the game. Although both players seemed to be heading toward a draw, the tension persisted for nearly three hours. Deshmukh spent considerable time on key decisions, affecting her earlier advantage, while Humpy maintained calmness, expertly navigating complexities. As the game approached its end, both had opportunities to gain an edge, but neither could capitalize.

At one point, Humpy repetitively checked with her queen, and Deshmukh declined a draw offer, choosing to press on. Ultimately, the game concluded in a balanced draw. This result sets the stage for an exciting contest, with Game 2 scheduled for today, where Humpy will play with the white pieces.
