Guwahati/New Delhi, 18 May (HS): BJP MP from Assam Dilip Saikia will be awarded the prestigious Sansad Ratna Award 2025 for outstanding parliamentary performance. He is among the 17 MPs who will be given this award in the 15th edition to be held in New Delhi at the end of July. This year two parliamentary committees will also be awarded this honor.
The Sansad Ratna Award Committee announced on Sunday that the award recognizes the impartial parliamentary achievements of MPs based on parameters such as subject-based debates, questions asked and private member bills introduced.
The awards were started in the year 2010 on the suggestion of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. These awards given by civil society aim to honor parliamentary excellence.
This year, four MPs will also be given special awards for “distinguished and sustained contribution to parliamentary democracy”— including BJP MP Bhartrihari Mahtab from Odisha, RSP’s NK Premachandran from Kerala, NCP (SP)’s Supriya Sule from Maharashtra and Shiv Sena’s Shrirang Appa Barne. All these MPs have been top performers in the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha and are now making their outstanding contribution in the 18th Lok Sabha as well.
Talking about the states, Maharashtra is at the forefront from where seven MPs will get this award, while two each from Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan and one each from Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam have been selected.
Apart from this, two standing parliamentary committees will also be honored— including the Standing Committee on Finance (Chairman: Bhartrihari Mahtab) and the Standing Committee on Agriculture (Chairman: Dr Charanjit Singh Channi).
The jury committee that selects the awards is headed by National Commission for Backward Classes chairman Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, who was the first MP to receive the Sansad Ratna award in 2010.
A total of 125 MPs have been honoured in 14 editions of these awards since their inception. The initiative is run by Prime Point Foundation and eMagazine Presence as a non-commercial venture in line with Dr Kalam’s vision.———
