Loss Angeles, 23 September (H.S.): Comedian Jimmy Kimmel is set to return to his late-night talk show on Tuesday following a suspension by parent company Disney over comments made about the recent death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The decision to reinstate Jimmy Kimmel Live! comes after the suspension ignited a fierce nationwide debate on censorship and freedom of speech.
Disney announced on Monday that it was bringing the show back after thoughtful conversations with the host. The network had initially suspended the program after Kimmel’s monologue on September 15, in which he joked about the political reaction to Kirk’s murder, was deemed ill-timed and thus insensitive.
The suspension followed significant political pressure, including threats from the Trump-appointed chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, to review ABC’s broadcast license. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed the suspension. In response, major affiliate groups, including Sinclair and Nexstar Media, pulled the show from their local station lineups. Sinclair announced it will replace the show with news programming starting Tuesday, with its return still under evaluation.
The network’s move to suspend Kimmel was met with immediate and widespread condemnation from First Amendment advocates, Hollywood figures, and actors’ guilds, who decried it as a dangerous act of censorship. More than 400 celebrities, including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Aniston, and Robert DeNiro, signed a letter calling the suspension a dark moment for freedom of speech. Fellow late-night hosts Jon Stewart and John Oliver also rallied in support of Kimmel.
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, the sole Democrat on the panel, praised Disney for finding its courage in the face of clear government intimidation and celebrated the public pushback against what she described as a blatant attempt to silence free speech.
