
New Delhi, 25 February (HS): Foreign Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has said that the need for immediate reform in the current global multilateral system should not be postponed to truly protect human rights. He was addressing the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHC) held in Geneva today through video conferencing.
He said ,At present multilateralism is needed more than ever in accordance with contemporary global realities. The last few years have exposed the shortcomings of the existing multilateral structures. This multilateral system was absent at the time of greatest need. If we want to truly protect and promote human rights, then we should not ignore immediate reform. He said that India is always ready to help and lead efforts for such change.
The Foreign Minister reiterated India’s commitment to ensure the protection of human rights for all. He said, India does not only say Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam but we live it. This perspective is needed more than ever in today’s time. In today’s time, the world needs to be united.
The Foreign Minister also mentioned terrorism during his speech and said that there should be no compromise in combating it. India has always demanded ‘zero tolerance’ towards terrorism and has opposed looking at it from a normal perspective.
He said that India’s unwavering commitment to human rights is deeply rooted in its enduring philosophy of global unity, openness and mutual respect. These values form the foundation of our constitutional framework, which guarantees fundamental rights while maintaining the ideals of justice, freedom and equality.
