EAM Jaishankar receives call from UN chief Guterres over Pahalgam attack

Delhi, 30 April (H.S.): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar received a call from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who condemned the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. Jaishankar expressed appreciation on X for Guterres’ unequivocal condemnation and emphasized the need for accountability, stating that India is committed to bringing the perpetrators and their backers to justice.

The incident has drawn global condemnation from several leaders. Meanwhile, Guterres also contacted Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the attack. Sharif, in his post on X, called for a transparent and neutral investigation and rejected Indian accusations, reaffirming Pakistan’s condemnation of terrorism in all its forms.

He urged the UN to address the Jammu and Kashmir dispute according to UNSC resolutions, asserting Pakistan’s commitment to peace while vowing to defend its sovereignty if challenged. Responsibility for the April 22 attack was initially claimed by The Resistance Front, a group linked to Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba, although they later retracted their claim. Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack, which left 26 dead and injured 17 others, highlighting the need for international clarity and action against terrorism.
