Electric Vehicle Maker Ordered to Refund Customer for Defective Scooter

Chennai, 16 March (H.S.) : The district consumer commission has directed Ozotec Automobiles Private Limited, an electric vehicle manufacturer, to refund Rs 1.25 lakh to R Vijayan, a resident of Peelamedu, for a defective e-scooter. The commission also ordered the company to pay Rs 10,000 in compensation and Rs 5,000 towards litigation costs.

Vijayan purchased the electric scooter from a dealer at Tatabad for Rs 1.25 lakh, which he paid through a bank loan. However, from the very first day of use, he noticed that the display meter was not functioning properly, and despite repeated complaints, the issue was not resolved.

The faulty display meter caused the vehicle to stop unexpectedly, leaving Vijayan stranded on several occasions. Despite being unable to use the vehicle, he continued to pay monthly loan instalments to the bank.

The district consumer commission’s order is a significant victory for consumers’ rights, highlighting the importance of manufacturers ensuring that their products meet quality standards.

This case is not an isolated incident, as there have been similar cases involving other electric vehicle manufacturers, such as Ola Electric, which was ordered to refund a customer for a defective S1 Pro scooter.
