Brussels, April 15 (HS): A growing rift between the European Union (EU) and the United States (U.S.) has prompted EU senior officials to utilize burner phones and basic laptops for security during U.S. visits. This decision responds to espionage concerns following a decline in trust since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency.
Key factors include Trump’s criticisms of NATO allies, leniency towards Russia, and trade tariffs. Additionally, recent leaks from Trump administration conversations on Signal have exacerbated distrust. The European Commission advises officials to use these disposable devices instead of regular smartphones to safeguard sensitive information from potential U.S. access. Such precautions, previously reserved for travel to countries like China and Ukraine, reflect heightened security measures.
Burner phones, being inexpensive and easily replaceable, help maintain privacy and reduce data theft risks.
