MANCHESTER, 26 October (H.S.): Manchester United’s resurgence under manager Ruben Amorim continued on Saturday as they climbed into the Premier League’s top four with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford.
In a dramatic reversal of fortunes, the win marked United’s third in a row, while reigning champions Liverpool slumped to a fourth consecutive league defeat, losing 3-2 away to Brentford.United’s victory, their best league run since February 2024, provided a clear sense of positive momentum. Summer signings once again proved their worth, with Matheus Cunha opening the scoring with his first goal for the club and Bryan Mbeumo adding a brace.
A deflected strike from Casemiro gave United a comfortable 3-0 lead before a late Brighton fightback created a tense finish. A brilliant free-kick from former United player Danny Welbeck and a stoppage-time header from Charalampos Kostoulas narrowed the deficit to 3-2, before Mbeumo sealed the victory with his second goal in the final moments.
Meanwhile, a different narrative unfolded for Liverpool, whose title defence appears to be in jeopardy. Despite a frantic late effort, a 3-2 loss at the Gtech Community Stadium leaves Arne Slot’s side in sixth place, four points adrift of leaders Arsenal having played an extra game. Goals from Dango Ouattara and Kevin Schade put Brentford ahead before Milos Kerkez pulled one back for the visitors.
An Igor Thiago penalty restored Brentford’s two-goal cushion, and though Mohamed Salah scored a brilliant late goal, Liverpool could not find an equalizer. This is a tough one to take, said captain Virgil van Dijk.
In other Premier League action on Saturday:Sunderland provided the season’s most surprising story, moving into second place with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chemsdine Talbi scored a dramatic winner in the third minute of stoppage time.
