Chennai, 20 March (H.S.) : In a significant move, France has extended an invitation to Tamil Nadu to join the global coalition on ocean rise and coastal resilience. This initiative aims to bring together cities, coastal regions, and small island developing states to address the challenges posed by rising sea levels.

The coalition, which will be launched at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, in June 2025, seeks to increase knowledge sharing and cooperation among member states to develop scalable solutions for coastal resilience.

Tamil Nadu’s participation in the coalition is expected to provide the state with a platform to share its experiences and best practices in addressing coastal erosion and flooding. The state’s coastline is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and its participation in the coalition is seen as a crucial step in enhancing its resilience to these challenges.

The invitation to Tamil Nadu is part of France’s efforts to mobilize global support for the coalition, which has already received backing from over 36 countries and international organizations.

Major objectives of the global Coalition are enhance cooperation among member states to address the challenges posed by rising sea levels

Develop scalable solutions for coastal resilience, increase knowledge sharing among member states to enhance their capacity to address coastal erosion and flooding and mobilize financial support to support the implementation of coastal resilience projects.

The coalition’s launch is expected to take place during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, in June 2025. The conference will bring together representatives from over 100 countries to discuss the challenges posed by ocean rise and coastal erosion.
