French President Emmanuel Macron Proposes Geneva as Venue for Historic Putin-Zelensky Peace Summit

French President Emmanuel Macron

Washington, August 19 (HS):

In a pivotal moment of diplomatic resolve, French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly endorsed Geneva as the potential site for a groundbreaking peace summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The announcement follows intensive high-level meetings in Washington on August 18, 2025, where US President Donald Trump, European leaders, and Zelensky convened to lay the foundational groundwork for what could be the most consequential face-to-face talks since the outbreak of armed conflict.

Macron emphasized the importance of choosing a venue symbolic of neutrality and trust, pointing to Switzerland’s Geneva as the ideal setting to host these historic negotiations. It will be hosted by a neutral country, maybe Switzerland — I’m pushing for Geneva — or another country, Macron revealed in an interview broadcast Tuesday on the French news channel LCI. This proposed summit aims to follow in the footsteps of prior, lower-level negotiations held in Istanbul earlier this year, which saw incremental but limited progress.

The French leader underscored the collective commitment of Western allies, noting that France and Britain planned a joint session the day following the Washington talks to update key Ukrainian partners on security guarantees—a core issue shaping the upcoming discussions. Macron further confirmed that from Tuesday onwards, diplomatic teams across these allied nations would commence detailed work to define their respective roles in supporting Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.

Addressing the sensitive issue of territorial concessions, Macron deferred decisively to Ukraine’s sovereignty, stating: Ukraine will make the concessions it deems just and right. He cautioned against any premature endorsement of territorial changes by force, warning, If countries can say, ‘we can take territory by force,’ that opens a Pandora’s box.

As diplomatic momentum builds, the world watches anxiously. Will Geneva become the stage where wariness gives way to peace? The prospect of Putin and Zelensky engaging directly in a neutral European city offers a fragile but hopeful beacon amid the shadows of ongoing conflict. The forthcoming talks could redefine the trajectory of Europe’s security landscape and signal a turning point in one of the 21st century’s most volatile geopolitical crises.
