Friedrich Merz wins lackluster victory in national election Sunday

Berlin, February 24 (HS): Opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s party Christian Democratic Union won Germany’s general election on Sunday. With this, Merz’s path to become Germany’s new Chancellor has been cleared. 69-year-old Friedrich Merz is considered a conservative leader.

German newspaper Bild has confirmed the victory of Friedrich Merz’s party in the election. His party has secured the largest vote share in the general election. He has defeated Olaf Scholz’s left Social Democratic Party (SPD).

According to German broadcaster ARD, the block led by Merz (Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU)) has secured 28.5 percent of the vote. Germany’s other party Alternative for Germany has secured 20.7 percent of the vote.

Born on November 11, 1955 in Brilon, Germany, Merz’s family has been associated with the field of law. Merz has also studied law. He entered politics in 1972. He married Charlotte in 1981. Charlotte is a judge. They have three children. In 1989, Merz was elected to the European Parliament. In 1994, he entered the German Federal Parliament Bundestag after winning from the Hochsauerlandkreis constituency.
