WELLINGTON, 17 October (H.S.): Former New Zealand fast bowler Gavin Larsen has returned to the role of selection manager for the national team, succeeding Sam Wells. Larsen previously held the same position from 2015 to 2023 before a stint as Performance Director at the English county club Warwickshire.
The 61-year-old, who was most recently involved with the Nelson Giants basketball team, will now work alongside Blackcaps head coach Gary Stead to oversee squad selections for all New Zealand, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI tours. In an official statement on his appointment, Larsen expressed his enthusiasm for the role.
It’s a real honour to be back on board with the Blackcaps and the national high-performance environment, he said.
I’m incredibly passionate about New Zealand cricket, and the opportunity to contribute at the highest level again is very exciting. I’m looking forward to starting this summer and helping the team succeed.
Daryl Gibson, New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) GM High Performance, stated that Larsen’s experience and understanding of the modern game made him the ideal candidate for the position.
Gavin’s familiarity with the role and his deep understanding of the responsibilities were key factors in his selection, Gibson noted. Furthermore, his passion, energy, and desire to contribute again really impressed us.
The selection model will remain unchanged, with head coach Gary Stead having the final say on team selections while working in collaboration with Larsen. Larsen is set to officially begin his duties on November 3.
