Geneva, May 24 (HS): The world’s number one tennis player Novak Djokovic secured a place in the final of the Geneva Open by defeating Cameron Norrie on Friday. With this victory, he is just one step away from his career’s 100th ATP title.
26-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic triumphed over Britain’s Norrie in the semifinal match with scores of 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1. Djokovic took the first set by breaking in the seventh game, winning it 6-4. However, in the second set, despite trailing 5-2, he managed to take the set to a tiebreak but lost it 6-7 after missing a match point.
In the deciding set, Djokovic appeared completely dominant. He won the first three games in a row to take a 3-0 lead and ultimately secured the match by converting his second match point.
Now, in the final, Djokovic will face Hubert Hurkacz from Poland. If he wins this title, he will become the third player after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer to win 100 titles on the ATP Tour.
The 38-year-old Djokovic’s appearance in the final marks his first of the season. He won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year but has not claimed any titles since then. He has chosen this tournament to prepare for the French Open.
Djokovic will now compete in the French Open starting Sunday, where he will face America’s Mackenzie McDonald in his first match. He aims to secure his 25th Grand Slam title by winning this prestigious tournament for the fourth time.
