New Delhi, June 2 (H.S.): Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from One Day International cricket with immediate effect. However, he will be available in the T20 format and hopes to keep playing until the next T20 World Cup in 2026. The 36-year-old Maxwell made this announcement during a lengthy interview on ‘The Final Word Podcast’. He mentioned that ODI cricket was becoming heavy on his body after he broke his leg in 2022. He also felt quite fatigued during the Champions Trophy of the same year.
Maxwell said, I started to feel that I was holding the team back a bit. I spoke with selector George Bailey and said that I wouldn’t be able to play until the 2027 World Cup. Now is the time to prepare someone else in my place.
He further added, I never wanted to play just for records or personal satisfaction. When I felt that I was no longer part of the team’s future, it was better to take my leave.
Maxwell has accumulated 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 in 149 ODIs, along with 77 wickets. His standout feature is his explosive strike rate of 126.70, the second-highest in ODI history, only behind Andre Russell, and the best among batsmen with over 2000 runs. His iconic knock of 201* against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup marked the first double century for Australia and in any run chase, coming in at number 6 when Australia was struggling at 91/7. Other remarkable innings include a record 40-ball century against the Netherlands, the fastest in World Cup history, and a 51-ball century against Sri Lanka, the fourth fastest.
During the 2020 England tour, he contributed to a match-winning 212-run partnership while chasing down 73/5. His performance in key matches, such as securing two wickets against Pakistan in the 2015 World Cup quarter-finals and taking a crucial wicket in the final of the 2023 World Cup, has been instrumental to Australia’s success. Australian cricket authorities have praised his dynamic contributions, with George Bailey and Todd Greenberg lauding his impact on the game and youth engagement. Currently, Maxwell is focusing on T20s and the Major League Cricket in the USA while recovering from an injury.
