New Delhi, May 12 (H.S.): Power Minister Manohar Lal conducted a review meeting on Monday in Panaji with Goa’s Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and senior officials, focusing on the electricity sector’s progress, efforts to minimize losses, and advancements under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). He urged the state to explore local electricity generation options and praised Goa’s success in achieving universal electrification and reducing losses.
Notably, Goa’s AT&C losses are at 9.32 percent, significantly lower than the national average, highlighting the state’s efficiency in its electricity distribution system. Lal emphasized the swift installation of smart meters, which could transform consumer interactions with DISCOMs through advanced data analytics and AI-ML tools. With contracts awarded, he expressed optimism about rapid implementation, prioritizing smart meters in various sectors, including government offices and high-load consumers, to enhance service delivery. He underscored the importance of operational efficiency and encouraged the integration of more renewable energy into the grid to reduce electricity supply costs. Additionally, Goa’s initiatives, such as installing rooftop solar plants and streamlining new connection processes, were commended. Lal suggested considering a nuclear power facility for long-term energy security, given that about 80 percent of Goa’s electricity is sourced externally. The meeting concluded with the Ministry of Energy’s commitment to support Goa in achieving its energy objectives.
