London ,September 18(HS): Marissa Laimou, a 28-year-old Greek heiress and cancer survivor, was found dead at her London apartment after what her family claims was a fatal reaction to an insect bite. The incident has sparked an internal probe at the hospital that treated her days earlier.
Laimou, a member of the prominent Laimos shipping family, was discovered lifeless in her bed on September 11 by her housekeeper. Her mother, Bessy Laimou, alleged that despite repeated visits to doctors and hospitals with symptoms including dizziness, fever, and infections, her daughter was discharged with antibiotics and not admitted for observation.
“She was bitten by an insect, she was itchy, she went to the doctor, she took antibiotics, she ate, she slept, and she never woke up. My daughter was saved from cancer. My little child,” her mother was quoted as saying in media reports.
According to The Independent, Laimou had consulted a home doctor and an oncologist, and was later examined by nurses at a hospital before being sent home. Medical professionals allegedly concluded there was no need for hospital admission. A post-mortem examination is expected in the coming days.
The Laimou family issued a statement expressing grief over the sudden loss, describing her as a “kind, cultured and modest” young woman who deeply loved art and theatre. She had previously collaborated with designers such as Sonia Rykiel and John Galliano, founded Rainbow Wave to introduce international brands to the UK market, and was active in London’s theatre scene.
The hospital concerned has initiated an internal review into her treatment prior to her death, amid mounting questions about whether crucial opportunities to save her life were missed.
