Greta Thunberg’s Gaza Flotilla Ignites Hope as Thousands Rally in Tunisia

Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia, September 8(HS): Massive crowds gathered at Tunisia’s Sidi Bou Said port on Sunday to welcome Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and her humanitarian flotilla, bound for Gaza with the mission to break Israel’s blockade. Accompanied by 350 pro-Palestinian activists aboard about 20 vessels stocked with medical supplies, food, and baby formula, Thunberg addressed the assembled supporters, condemning the ongoing genocide and mass starvation she attributes to Israel’s siege.

The flotilla, which departed Barcelona last week, will pause in Tunisia for several days to augment supplies and receive additional activists before sailing towards Gaza. Pro-Palestinian European Parliament member Rima Hassan joined the reception, emphasizing that the Palestinian cause now rests in the hearts of global citizens rather than governments.

Israel has repeatedly denounced the flotilla’s attempts as publicity stunts, maintaining its blockade is necessary due to Hamas control in Gaza and accusing aid diversions. Meanwhile, a recent UN-backed report confirmed famine conditions in Gaza, linking them directly to Israel’s systematic obstruction of aid access.

Organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla emphasize the mission’s humanitarian purpose and determination to challenge what they describe as an illegal siege, despite past Israeli interceptions of similar efforts. Building momentum and international solidarity, the flotilla represents a bold statement of support for Gaza’s beleaguered population amid escalating humanitarian crises.
