New Delhi, May 13 (HS): The Supreme Court has rejected the bail plea of Harpreet Singh Talwar, also known as Kabir Talwar, a businessman from Delhi arrested in the ₹21,000 crore drug smuggling case at the Mundra port in Gujarat. The bench headed by Justice Suryakant granted Talwar the option to approach the Supreme Court for bail after six months.
The Supreme Court described the charges against Talwar related to terror financing as premature. The court instructed the trial court to expedite the proceedings of the case and schedule hearings twice a month. During the hearing, ASG Aishwarya Bhati, representing the NIA, opposed the bail plea, stating that the drug money was used in the activities of the terrorism organization Lashkar-e-Taiba.
On September 12, 2021, some containers arrived at Mundra port from Afghanistan via Iran, some of which contained heroin. The weight of this heroin was 2988.21 kilograms. The investigation revealed that this was the sixth batch that was intercepted. Some Afghan nationals were also arrested in this case.
