Kolkata, 28 February (H.S.)
Lawyer and Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee had accused Ratna Chatterjee, wife of former Kolkata Mayor Shobhan Chatterjee, of threatening him. He had also drawn the attention of the Calcutta High Court on this issue. In view of this, Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya sought clarification from Ratna on Friday. The judge asked Ratna’s lawyer to submit his client’s statement by noon. The judge first wanted to hear Ratna’s statement in view of Kalyan’s allegations. Ratna’s lawyer requested the court that both the parties should be ordered not to make any statement in public or in the media.
The judge said that I had requested to stay on that matter for two days. Why did you not clarify your position? Can’t I expect this? Accusing Ratna, Shovan’s lawyer told the court that she had said in media, I am not divorcing Shobhan just because of Kalyan Da’s words. He had said don’t take divorce, fight, I am on your side. Such comments are contempt of court. Ratna also said, Kalyan is turning back. He has already turned back.” This is not criticism, but a personal attack.
The judge told Ratna’s lawyer, You have unnecessarily created such a problem.
Notably, Shobhan and Ratna’s marriage broke down a few years ago. Their divorce case was going on in Alipore Court. There Ratna requested that the testimony of some more people be taken. The lower court rejected that request. Ratna has approached the High Court challenging that decision. There Kalyan Banerjee is advocating on behalf of Shobhan.
