Guwahati, 23 April (HS): The BJP government in Assam is trampling democracy under its feet. Police repression is being done on Congress candidates under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the democratic rights of the people are being snatched away. This serious allegation was made by senior All India Congress Committee leader and Assam Congress Media Department in-charge Charan Singh Sapra in a press conference held at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati on Wednesday.
He said that the BJP is now doing the politics of lies, Jumla and Jadugaari (cheating). The BJP’s rule in the whole country is running on this triple ‘J’ model – lies, propaganda and cheating. Democracy is being killed in Assam and governance is being run with ‘muscle power’.
Sapra said that the police force is being misused to suppress the opposition before the Panchayat elections. If votes are taken on the strength of sticks, then what will be the meaning of democracy? The BJP is making Assam a political battlefield. There is an atmosphere of fear in Assam. Citing the cases filed against Congress spokesperson Ritam Singh and the removal of security of MP Rakibul Hussain, he said that this is an attempt to intimidate the opposition and suppress their voice.
Targeting the Chief Minister, Sapra said that the character assassination attempt against Gaurav Gogoi and his wife reflects the desperation of the BJP. He also expressed concern about the freedom of the media and alleged that journalists who expose the truth are being threatened.
He said that the public is now ready to end this atmosphere of fear and challenged the BJP that if they have courage, they should vote not with sticks but with the decision of the public.
In the press conference, Sapra strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir and demanded the strictest action against the terrorists. Paying tribute to the dead and expressing condolences to their families, he said that the Modi government has completely failed to stop terrorism.
On this occasion, many leaders including AICC media coordinator Harshad Sharma, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee media head Vedavrata Bora, senior leaders Mehdi Alam Bora, Gopal Sharma, Netaranjan Choudhury, Rupa Kalita, Happy Gogoi and Rupak Das were present.
