Khowai (Tripura), 2 May (HS): Progressive farmer Hiralal Das, resident of Batapura village of Khowai district of Tripura, has been nominated as a member in the Management Board of Central Agricultural University, Imphal. This appointment has been made for a period of three years, which is considered to be a high level recognition of his innovative agricultural work.

Das is the secretary of Naveen Farmers Club, which was established by KVK Khowai and NABARD. He has set an example in his area by adopting techniques like scientific farming, seed production, animal husbandry, poultry farming and vermicompost. While farming on just 3.5 acres of land, he successfully used methods like Soil Health Card, True Potato Seeds and Integrated Pest and Nutrition Management and increased his annual income to ₹4.8 lakh.

Under his leadership, the Farmers Club has also set up a permanent office and custom hiring centre, making modern agricultural machinery available to farmers of the region at subsidised rates. His appointment to the Board of Management of the Central Agricultural University is expected to play a key role in policy formulation for the welfare of farmers and give further impetus to the Income Doubling campaign.
