New Delhi, April 29(H.S.): Hockey India has today extended heartfelt congratulations to PR former goalkeeper of the Indian men’s hockey team and current coach of the Indian junior men’s team, for being honored with the country’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan.

With this prestigious award, Sreejesh’s name has been associated with the legendary figure of hockey, Major Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and almost seven decades later, Sreejesh has revived this honor with his unique contributions to Indian hockey.

Known as the God of Modern Indian Hockey, Sreejesh played 336 matches for India during his illustrious 18-year international career. He bid farewell to professional hockey following the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he played a brilliant role in helping India secure a bronze medal. Previously, he had also played a crucial role in winning India’s historic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

During his career, Sreejesh has won the FIH ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ award three times (2021, 2022, and 2024), the Arjuna Award in 2015, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021, and the title of ‘World Games Athlete of the Year.’ Since making his senior international debut in 2010, he has been a strong pillar of the Indian defense, recognized for his composure and outstanding performance under pressure.

Transitioning to a coaching role, Sreejesh has also waved the flag of success. Under his coaching, the Indian junior team won the Junior Asia Cup title in November 2024.

Sreejesh has participated in four Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024), winning two gold medals (2014 and 2022) and one bronze medal (2018) at the Asian Games, as well as two silver medals (2014 and 2022) at the Commonwealth Games. Additionally, he has played a significant role in India’s four victories at the Asian Champions Trophy (2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023).

Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey commented on this achievement, saying, P.R. Sreejesh’s contribution to Indian hockey has been unique. As both a player and coach, he has presented an incredible example of excellence and leadership. The Padma Bhushan is a fitting honor for his inspiring career.

Hockey India General Secretary Bhola Nath Singh also expressed, Sreejesh has been the heart of the revival of Indian hockey. His individual milestones are moments of pride for the entire hockey world. We wish him a bright future.
