Hollywood actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner dies aged 54

Delhi, 22 July (H.S.): Malcolm-Jamal Warner, famed for portraying Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at age 54 due to drowning during a holiday in Costa Rica. According to local authorities, he was swept out to sea by a strong current while swimming at Playa Grande. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Warner is survived by his wife and daughter.

Warner, who gained critical acclaim as an Emmy nominee in 1986 for his role, was cast by Bill Cosby on the final day of auditions for the show, which aired from 1984 to 1992. The Cosby Show was groundbreaking for its portrayal of an affluent African American family and was a ratings leader during its run. Warner spoke about the show’s impact and the positive reception it received from fans.

After The Cosby Show, Warner went on to star in several other series, including Malcom & Eddie, and made guest appearances on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Sesame Street. Most recently, he portrayed AJ Austin on The Resident. Warner earned a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2015 and received another nomination in 2023 for his spoken word album Hiding in Plain View. He also hosted a podcast addressing mental health in the black community.

Following his passing, many celebrities expressed their condolences. Basketball star Magic Johnson remembered him fondly, while actress Jennifer Love Hewitt described him as a talented gentleman. Vivica A. Fox and Tracee Ellis Ross also shared their sadness, praising his warmth and talent. Senator Raphael Warnock remarked on Warner’s impact on his generation, emphasizing the profound loss felt by many.
