WASHINGTON, 29 October (H.S.): U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday definitively shut down speculation about a potential third presidential term for Donald Trump, stating there is no viable route for such a bid under the U.S. Constitution. Johnson, a key Republican ally of the President, confirmed that he has discussed the matter directly with Trump.
I don’t see a path for that, Johnson stated during his daily press conference at the Capitol. He explained that he and the President have talked about the constrictions of the Constitution, specifically the 22nd Amendment, which explicitly limits a president to two terms.Amending the Constitution, Johnson noted, would be an arduous and lengthy process.
The Speaker’s comments came in response to President Trump’s continued public musings about extending his time in the White House. Just 10 months into his second term, Trump has fueled the discussion, and items like Trump 2028 hats have appeared as souvenirs.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Monday, Trump said he would love to do it, referring to another run. However, he also dismissed a theoretical scenario where he could run as vice president and then assume the presidency, calling the idea too cute and not something the public would accept.
Johnson characterized the President’s remarks on the subject as a way of provoking his political opponents. He has a good time with that, trolling the Democrats, Johnson said, dismissing concerns from critics as hair on fire.
The Speaker sought to redirect focus, asserting that the administration is committed to a successful four-year term. We’re going to deliver for the American people, and we’ve got a great run ahead of us, he affirmed.
